Will my cat actually use it?

How long does one bag last?
With regular scooping, one bag lasts most single-cat households up to 30 days. Multi-cat homes may go through it a bit faster, but because tofu litter absorbs 2–3× more than clay, you use less of it overall.
What are the ingredients?
Dr. Tabby's is made from soy fiber, pea fiber, guar gum (a plant-based binder), and activated charcoal made from coconut husks. That's it — no clay, no silica, no synthetic chemicals.
If it clumps, then how is it also flushable?
Great question. The same plant fibers that clump tightly when wet will dissolve when exposed to a large volume of water — like a full toilet flush. Clay clumps harden like cement (and will clog your pipes). Dr. Tabby's clumps hold their shape for scooping, then break apart completely in water.
Is it septic safe?
Yes. The plant-based fibers dissolve just like toilet paper, making them safe for septic systems. Just flush small amounts at a time with a full flush of water.
My plumber said never to flush anything.
Fair advice for most products — clay, crystal, and even some "flushable" litters can damage pipes over time. Dr. Tabby's is different because the tofu fibers genuinely dissolve in water rather than just breaking into smaller solids. That said, flush in small amounts and always use a full flush. If you have very old plumbing, you can always toss clumps in the trash instead — it's still 100% biodegradable.
I thought you weren't supposed to flush cat waste because of Toxoplasmosis?
You're right to bring this up. The concern is that water treatment plants don't always eliminate Toxoplasma, which can affect marine life. If you're near a coastal area or have a compromised immune system, we recommend bagging and binning the waste instead. The litter itself is safe to flush — it's the cat waste some guidelines suggest disposing of differently.
Does this work with self-cleaning litter boxes?
Most self-cleaning litter boxes are designed for fine, clay-style litters and haven’t quite caught up to natural, pellet-based litters like tofu. Because of that, this litter may not work reliably in many automatic systems.
Does it expire?
Unopened, Dr. Tabby's has a shelf life of about 24 months. Once opened, store it in a sealed container in a cool, dry place and use within a few months for best performance. Moisture is the main enemy — keep it dry and it'll stay fresh.
What's the difference between the Charcoal and Lavender formulas?
Both share the same tofu base and clumping performance. The Charcoal formula is completely unscented — it neutralizes odor at a molecular level using activated charcoal. The Lavender formula adds a light natural lavender scent for owners who prefer a subtle fresh smell in the litter area.
What makes the lavender formula different from other scented litters?
Most scented litters use synthetic fragrances to mask odor — you're basically swapping ammonia smell for cheap perfume. Dr. Tabby's Lavender formula still uses activated charcoal to neutralize odors, then adds a light natural lavender scent on top. It freshens without overwhelming your cat's sensitive nose.
Isn't scented litter bad for cats?
It can be — if the scent is synthetic or overpowering. Cats have a much stronger sense of smell than humans, so heavy artificial fragrances can put them off the box entirely. Dr. Tabby's uses a light, natural lavender scent at a level that's been tested to be appealing (or at least neutral) to cats. If your cat is particularly scent-sensitive, our unscented Charcoal formula is always a safe bet.
Is lavender safe for cats? I've heard it can be toxic.
Concentrated lavender essential oil can be toxic to cats — but the diluted, litter-grade lavender used in Dr. Tabby's is at a level considered safe for normal use. Your cat isn't eating the litter, and the scent exposure from a litter box is minimal. That said, if your cat has a known sensitivity or you're concerned, stick with our Charcoal formula — it's completely fragrance-free.
Can I mix the lavender and unscented litters together?
Absolutely. A lot of customers do this to dial in their preferred scent level. Start with a higher ratio of unscented and add more Lavender until you find the right balance for you and your cat.

I absolutely love this litter!
I’ve never owned a cat before and I was a little nervous about being someone with a smelly apartment. My baby boy loves the litter and has no issue using the litter box. It’s super easy to clean the litter box because I just toss it in the toilet and it’s gone. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who lives in a small apartment and needs a good litter to mask the smell! I also left some cat pictures because Shaggy is just so handsome!
